Zaytoven has some of the biggest Trap bangers on this side of the hemisphere. (We’re still waiting on that JAY-Z and Zaytoven collab). The producer recently showed up at Mass Appeal’s Open Space and explained why he was ashamed of the music he was making. Read more below:

“At first I was ashamed,” says church organist turned trap producer Zaytoven. “They rappin’ bout drugs, they rappin’ bout robbing people… all type of stuff, and I’m a musician in the church.” The man born Xavier Dotson fell in love with music in church before moving to Atlanta and becoming a pioneer of trap production. Even now—after producing hits for the likes of Gucci Mane, Migos, OJ Da Juiceman, both of Future’s ‘Beast Mode’ projects, not to mention his own album, ’Trap Holizay’—Zaytoven still shows up to church every Sunday to play organ. During a recent visit to MASS APPEAL HQ, the legendary producer told the stories behind the making of many of his best-loved records. He also shared the moment when he realized the larger purpose behind his career. “I’m put around the guys that kill somebody or rob somebody or do certain things for a reason,” he says. “Where these guys gonna get their influence if they don’t see somebody personally doing something different?” Check out the latest episode of Open Space right now.
