Watch the Pilot Episode of ‘Black-ish’

One of the most controversial shows on TV is out now and people are either upset about it or they love it and it garnered 10.8 million viewers on the pilot. I’m kind of in the middle. On one hand, I did feel as though they touched on the race topic a little too much, enough to make even black folks feel uncomfortable. On the other hand, there were a lot of good points that were made from the perspective of a black man in the upper echelon of society.

One scene where he’s walking out to check his mail and the imaginary animal tour comes down his street resonates with me. You can never understand the feeling of people staring you up and down because of your skin tone. Another scene where he’s promoted to the “urban” division is something I’ve dealt with. You wonder if people can see you in any light other than being the black guy who’s “hip and has swag”.

Anywho, the show had it’s funny moments and it’s dry moments but all in all I think the show has massive potential. If they can tone down the blunt race talk and finesse it a little better, the show can be around for some time.
