Documentary Movie on Addiction

The Golden Thread Documentary Movie Poster

Short Productions and Chapter House Sober Living are hosting the premiere screening of the new documentary The Golden Thread at the Portland House of Music on March 22nd at 4:30pm. The film has created a viral interest through social media with almost 60,000 views of the preview in less than a week.

The Golden Thread is a documentary film about the journey through addiction and recovery. Targeting the heroin epidemic in Portland, Maine, this is a story of a man (Michael Smith) who overcomes the addiction of drugs and alcohol while growing up in Portland. Now carrying a message of recovery and treatment in Dallas, Texas, he revisits his hometown to encounter some emotional circumstances and a State in the midst of a deadly drug epidemic.

In 2015, the state of Maine had a record number of deaths by overdose, most of them directly related to heroin and opioids. Officials state that the need for education on the deadly nature of addiction and access to treatment are the two main areas of focus in the state. The Golden Thread is one step towards helping educate the community through authentic portraits of those who have survived addiction and those who haven’t.

The film explores these issues and portrays the miracle of recovery, for those that find a way out. In addition, it identifies how recovery happens and why treatment works. Through his time studying counseling at Southern Maine Community College, Michael Smith developed a passion for the treatment process and how a community, like Portland, can develop a recovery oriented system of care for those afflicted with addiction.

Michael Smith and the director of the film, Tyler J. Short will be at the screening and will have a question and answer time set aside at the end of the film. The screening at the Portland House of Music is just the beginning of The Golden Thread’s campaign to spread awareness and hope on a national level.
